One of the favourite things to do in Chipping Campden is Robert Dover’s Games (also known as Dover’s Games to locals), whcih brings to an end a number of festivals. The Games, which began in 1896, are a wonderful family event with a unique torch lit procession, music, old country games such as shin kicking (don’t worry you have to enter), old-fashioned English sports, dancing and more! At the end there is a large bonfire and fireworks with a beautiful view for everyone to see. A truly unique event to the Cotswolds, known internationally.
Following after Dover’s Games, Scuttlebrook Wake starts with a procession and parade passing shops and houses through the High Street. Afterwards the square is filled with entertainment and fun for all including a fare, Morris Dancing, Country Dancing and more. Each year there is also a fancy dress competition, which brings with it a lot of laughter and fun all on its own. Other events include children’s races, prizes, and old-fashioned original playground, and more.
If you like your gardening, then visit Chipping Campden during the Open Gardens Weekend. This historical event brings to life the gardens of Chipping Campden with over 20 that participate. It is also an opportunity to explore many of Chipping Campden’s old houses which open up to the public too.
